Rawal Gin

Packaging of the Month was taken from an article written by Andrew Gibbs in the June issue of Entrepreneur Magazine.

WHO: Spanish design firm Dorian created packaging for Rawal, a small-batch premium gin sold exclusively at Pesca Salada, a bar in Barcelona’s El Raval district that is know for its gin and tonics.

WHAT: Dorian was inspired by Pesca Salada’s electic visual language. The bar carries an irreverent nautical theme, with a “fish scale” ceiling made of layered plates, oversize sardine cans and a colorful faux aquarium. The bottles play off that theme with illustrated retro-style characters striking classic swimmers’ poses. As the level of liquid drops, the figures transition from being underwater to above. Dorian had the images screen-printed, producing a better result to the illusion than transparent pressure-sensitive labels.

WHY WE LOVE IT: Awarded best in show at The Dieline Awards 2015, Rawal gin is a striking example of design simplicity executed in an innovative way-an authentic representation of the company that produces it and an entirely new approach to spirits packaging. The interactive visual game that occurs as the bottle empties creates a memorable, lasting connection with the consumer-the ultimate goal in product design.
